I make no secret of my admiration for Walter Murch, the extraordinary film-maker/editor behind a great many "great" films. That he is also a student of the craft as well as a practitioner makes him an excellent teacher, and as film is only one strata of his depth of knowledge, he exhibits a keen perspective that informs his work.
Recently, he gave a talk at the San Francisco International Film Festival, and the subject centered around "The Three Fathers of Cinema" and they're not the usual suspects, mostly. I've found a video of a version of the talk (recorded in Spain), and it presents some interesting ideas on the disciplines and dichotomies of the film-art.
